Obvara

Obvara (Ab-Vara) is a firing process that is believed to have originated in Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages. It is nicknamed “Baltic Raku” and its earthy beauty is making a strong revival.  Bisque pots are heated to 1650° F, dunked in an obvara mixture of yeast, flour and water that has been “brewed” for 3 days, and then in water to rapidly cool and seal the porous surface.  The longer a piece is dunked in the obvara mixture, the darker the color becomes…it is a matter of seconds!

Obvara pieces are art and not food safe or watertight!
